SCHOOL OF THE NATIONS
PRE-K & KINDERGARTEN
(Playschool, Nursery 1 and 2) DEPARTMENTS
COMMUNICATION, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY
Language is developed through communication with each other and adults. Children will have
daily story sessions, become aware of print and will develop pre-writing skills.
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Physical development takes place in all our learning environments both inside and outside. The
children will handle tools, objects, construction and malleable materials safely to increase their
control and coordination.
MATHEMATICS
Mathematical concepts are acquired through a variety of play opportunities. Children gain
experiences through real-life role play situations, number games and rhymes.
UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD THROUGH HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY AND SCIENCE
Children will be given opportunities to have first-hand experiences that encourage exploration,
observation, problem solving, prediction, critical thinking, decision-making and discussion to see
our world through different eyes.
ICT, ROBOTICS AND CHESS
Children have opportunities to plan, make and evaluate objects using a variety of materials.
They will have access to computers and programmable toys. Chess promotes critical thinking
and strategy and when tied to robotics it leads to unlimited possibilities.
EXPRESSIVE
Children will also be exposed to Music, Spanish and Drama.
Our programme is designed to unleash a passion for learning in a fun and creative environment.
ORGANISATION OF THE PRE – K EARLY YEARS’ CURRICULUM
To allow children to learn more holistically and to enable learning to be reinforced across many different linked areas, work is organised within Themes and Topics so that all six Areas of Learning are brought together cohesively. The themes and topics vary from year to year and on occasions are child-initiated but generally they are drawn from the list below which however is not exhaustive:
Ourselves.....................................Homes
Places..........................................Journeys
Seasons.......................................Festivals
Weather........................................People Who Help Us
Food and Health...........................Animals and Plants
Materials.......................................Light and Sound
EXTRA CURRICULAR CLUBS
Nursery is an integral part of the School of the Nations family and our aim is to offer a range of
educational experiences that will enhance the children’s early learning. Within our programme we aim
to promote a caring environment based on the virtues programme and a place:
• to ‘attempt things’ without fear of failure
• where we respect and develop talent
• where we know that what we say matters
• where self-esteem is given a high priority
• where there is a strong relationship between parents, staff and children
We follow the Ministry of Education curriculum while enriching the
experience our children will have in the classroom. Your child’s development
will be planned around the following:
PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
This is one of the most important aspects of early education. Children will be encouraged to become independent in their self-help skills; dressing, organisation and planning. They will be encouraged to take turns, share equipment, share their opinions and prepare their own snack. There will be opportunities in small groups and in circle time to discuss feelings, friendships and relationships.
PRE-K DEPARTMENT
Children in Pre-School follow a syllabus that is guided by the requirements of the Foundation Stage for Nursery Education. The Foundation Stage syllabus sets out six Areas of Learning covering children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. Each of these areas includes several aspects of learning which are listed below:
Play, exploration and experiments form the core of our teaching strategies as we seek to nurture each child’s innate critical thinking, creativity and innovative skills.
IGNITING A PASSION FOR LIFELONG LEARNING!
PRIMARY DEPARTMENT
& SPECIAL EDUCATION
SPECIAL EDUCATION – LEARNING KNOWS NO BOUNDS
Our Special Education programme is designed with the child in mind to strengthen his/
her gifts and talents while developing strategies to help him / her self-manage and
function effectively in society. We use the BrainRx Programme along with swimming
and occupational therapy. Students are also integrated into the regular classroom and
are engaged in any co-curricular activity they enjoy. The success of our programme is
the result of the excellent relationship between home and school.
THE BRAINRx PROGRAMME FROM LEARNING Rx
At LearningRx, you’ll do fun, challenging exercises for your brain with the help of
your own personal trainer. The face-to-face nature of the training relationship allows
LearningRx brain trainers to:
focus on results by customizing each training session and encouraging students to work
past their comfort levels.
focus on attitude by challenging children to recognize and pursue their potential,
learning to see failure not as something to be avoided at all costs, but as a temporary
stepping-stone to greater success.
focus on confidence by encouraging struggling children to fully engage, embrace
challenges, recognize improvements, and celebrate gains.
ABOUT BRAINRx BRAIN TRAINING
The BRAINRXx BRAIN TRAINING
• programmes consist of intense mental exercises that sharpen the core skills used to think, learn, read, reason, and pay attention.
• is not tutoring - it doesn’t teach information. Instead, it changes how the brain grasps and uses incoming information.
• uses a unique blend of one-on-one brain training (with a personal coach) and digital brain training (done on a computer).
• is fun to do. The game-like exercises are enjoyable, and the fast-pace at which improvements are experienced makes the experience rewarding, as well.
• sharpens the brain skills we use in everyday life. In other words, when brain skills are sharper, life is easier.
PRIMARY DEPARTMENT
School of the Nations is built on the philosophy that all children can and will learn in a fun and
engaging environment.
OUR GOLDEN STANDARDS FOR EDUCATION ARE SIMPLE AND POWERFUL:
• Relationships are positive – when all are valued and shown respect.
• The curriculum is innovative, stimulating, motivating and challenging.
• There is a shared understanding of learning.
• There is excellent teamwork and communication.
• Everyone knows that they can achieve success.
• We celebrate diversity.
We hope that by achieving these Golden Standards, children will become self-motivated, life-
long learners, who understand how to learn, and have a range of strategies to support their
learning. We believe that every member of our community is a learner, and that adults can
model learning behaviours for children.
BUILDING LEARNING POWER
We try to develop the four R’s of children’s learning:
• Resilience – being able to lock on to learning (perseverance, managing distractions, noticing
and absorption).
• Resourcefulness – being able to learn in different ways (questioning, making links, reasoning
and imagining).
• Reflectiveness – being able to become more strategic about learning (planning, distilling
and revising).
• Reciprocity – being able to learn alone and with others (imitation, interdependence, empathy
and listening, collaboration).
These dispositions help children to increase their learning capacity.
OUR VIBRANT CURRICULUM
We believe that learning should be fun!
We achieve high standards of achievement and attainment through a clear focus on teaching skills;
in literacy, numeracy, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and across all other subject
areas. We fulfil all National Curriculum requirements that lead to the National Grade Six Assessment.
However, we enhance our programme with Robotics, Chess, Spanish, Music, Art, Library and Physical
Education. In Grade 6 we offer the kidsMBA.
BEHAVIOUR
Our actions speak to who we are as people and we strive to develop a moral compass in our pupils
and school community to show the influence of humanity in action. These are our ‘Golden Rules’ of
behavior for all members of our community. We expect all children to keep the ‘Golden Rules’:
Do be gentle – don’t hurt anyone.
Do be kind – don’t hurt others’ feelings.
Do be honest – don’t cover up the truth.
Do work hard – don’t waste time.
Do play co-operatively – don’t spoil other people’s games.
Do look after property – don’t waste or damage things.
Do listen to people – don’t interrupt.
These rules are simple enough for all the children to understand. There will be frequent reminders
of the rules in school assemblies, during class discussions and on posters throughout the school. By
maintaining the rules, all members of the school community will feel happy, valued and secure.
EXTRA CURRICULAR CLUBS
We have a rich variety of activities for children in the afternoons and on Saturdays. All children must
be engaged in at least one club. Our clubs are:
• Robotics • Choir • Drama
• Math • Public Speaking • Yoga
• Chess • Debating • Music

COUNSELLOR
The Social and Emotional development of our learners is another key component of development
throughout our school. Our SEL programme gives learners the skills to work towards their unique
goals, manage their emotions, nurture positive relationships and exhibit empathy. Our counsellor
helps learners to create the foundation where they learn about themselves in a safe and nurturing
environment and more importantly, she gives the confidential support in their times of crisis
whether big or small.
SERVICE – We live our motto through Service. We teach our learners to be of service to those in
need and our community as each act of service has a positive impact in persons’ lives. As a school
we have one major community project per year and smaller class projects per term.
MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGHSCHOOL
(SECONDARY DEPARTMENT)
IGCSE
In Form Five (Grade 11) students sit the University of Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations. Many students then proceed to Nations School of Sixth Form Studies for either one or two years to attain the entry requirements necessary for university entrance. The Middle and High School programmes integrate theory with real world experience helping our students to exceed their expectations. Learning is fun and engaging when students are stimulated, encouraged and believe that they are “gems of inestimable value”.
